St Foy is within easy reach of the big names – Val d'Isère, Tignes, Les Arcs, La Plagne and La Rosière (with its link to the Italian La Thuile) – as well as Sainte Foy Tarentaise itself. St Foy is often referred to as the "best kept secret in the French Alps" and offers extensive off-piste and touring opportunities. It has built up a cult following amongst off-piste skiers who revel in the extensive powder fields where it's still possible to make fresh tracks days after a snowfall. This is where the local ski instructors choose to ski on their days off! Prized descents include the infamous Fogliettaz North Face, Col Grenier and the descent to the deserted summer farming hamlet of Le Monal. The series of steep couloirs descending from the top ridge will get the adrenalin flowing for even the most adventurous off-pisters, whilst the easily accessible, gentle powder fields between the pisted runs offer an ideal training ground for those new to the delights of off-piste skiing.
The small area also means you're never far from the village, so it's easy to take breaks if your endurance is flagging. The top half of the mountain ais a powder bowl, whilst the lower runs wind through the trees, so intermediates have the best of both worlds. It's possible to ski from peak to base on red runs, from L'Aiguille, to Creux de Formeian, and onto La Savonette. The Morion and Crystal Dark black runs from the Col de l'Aiguille peak are a good place to start for those who like a challenge. You can then move on to exploring the vast amounts of off-piste terrain. For a longer ride, start at the top of the Foglietta and ski back to Sainte Foy on the road from Bourg-St-Maurice to Val d'Isère. Sainte Foy has fabulous off-piste routes with stunning and unforgettable scenery. The north face of Fogliettaz is one of the best routes in the area, much favoured by mountain guides because of its snow quality. There are also loads of ski touring routes with summits of up to 3, 800m, including the Archeboc and Ruitor peaks.
