The YHA was excellent. Great location, lots of room for the kids to play outside, a swimming pool and big verandahs to enjoy a wine at the end of the day. The hosts are lovely and you can hire bikes to visit the local vineyards. I highly recommend this as a place for large groups with kids that isn't too expensive. Many of the hotels were charging in excess of $290 per night and we did not want to spend this much considering check-in is 3pm and we would be out and about most of the time hence why we chose a budget hotel. The YHA is decent accommodation overall. We and we stayed in a room with a double bed and bunks and ensuite. The weekend we stayed it was very hot and the room did not have air con, only a small blower fan in the corner of the room which was not sufficient. The room felt like a boiler so we when there we had to spend a lot of time in the dining area which was the only place which was air conditioned.

The landscapes are also stunning! The lady running the place is adorable, she helped us and gave us advice. It's also quite small, so no crowd, no queue for the bathrooms and a very quiet place! It's just outside the town of Cessnock itself and it's not in the best location if you don't have a car, but staff will pick you up from Cessnock bus station. Staff were pretty friendly and helpful all round. Bike hire is definitely handy to get to the wineries and lunch places. Reception will provide a map, but it helps to do a quick google maps search beforehand.
Other than that, it's a fair walk to anywhere, and buses are infrequent. There is a convenience store and Subway fast food place down the road, but everything else is far away. Wifi is $5 a day and can be a little slow and cut out sometimes, but if you're patient it works well enough. The place is clean (rooms, toilets and kitchen), the location is beautiful, easy to reach and well positioned to visit the surroundings. It can be cold in the night as there is no heating in the rooms, but beds are plenty of blankets.
