The guide took my group to some excellent viewpoints. On the boat tour I saw penguins and a seal resting on the rocks. I had a fish dinner in Ancud and decided to watch the sunset from the fortress up on the hill, where the local teenagers hang out. I think I saw some sort of protest there for international women's day maybe? Day 4: I got up and went to Chiloe national park, which is the natural crown jewel of the place. The park was a small area with a bunch of well connected and nice short trails. It was kind of rainforest-y but also had beach biomes with great views of the ocean, and a lake. I sat on the sand dunes and read for hours. I probably fell asleep even for a little while. I then got back to Castro and took the bus to Puerto Varas (another lovely place). What Went Right: Almost everything - it's a really lovely part of Patagonia that isn't talked about as much as say, Torres Del Paine or El Chalten or Pucon. Those places are great of course, but Chiloe is unique. It provides the natural beauty of Patagonia along with unique local culture, excellent food, charming churches, and charming markets.
I took a very quick glance out of the corner of my eye to check that the way behind me was clear, and I slowly started walking backwards so I was going back in the direction I had come from but was still facing the car. After what seemed like hours but was actually just a few minutes the car started up and sped off into the distance, thankfully not reappearing again. I started walking forwards again and made it back to my flat. I locked myself in and didn't tell anyone about what happened for a very long time. Looking back, I see that as soon as I realised something shady was going on I should maybe have rung the police or campus security. But at the time as I was in fight or flight mode I wanted to be able to focus all my senses on the situation around me rather than being distracted by a phone. On the surface of it, the car didn't look particularly shady, it was just a normal hatchback by a fairly popular car manufacturer. The naive part of me wants to think that the person was stopping to check their phone or a map, thought I was someone they knew or was just trying to pull a prank.
