SIMON LAMBERT: This recession is dire but what matters now is how the UK climbs out of the hole - and there are some signs that look promising Published: 06:00 GMT, 13 August 2020 | Updated: 06:00 GMT, 13 August 2020 The UK economy is in recession. The ONS's confirmation that we are technically in recession managed to be both important and perhaps the most meaningless piece of news of this year. Often with a recession there is a 'will we or won't we moment' as GDP figures are closely watched to see if the economy has contracted for two consecutive quarters. We'd already seen the figures for the first three months of 2020 and they weren't pretty, with GDP down 2. 2 per cent between January and March. Yet, there was no doubt whatsoever that the April to June figures were going to make for even more unpleasant reading. The 20. 4% decline in GDP from April to June was the worst quarterly drop on record Yesterday, the ONS announced the UK economy had shrunk by an astonishing 20. 4 per cent between April and June.

A stunning beach covering almost the entire west coast of Jersey. It is a flat, wide, sandy beach, with sand dunes stretching back from the bay almost as far as the airport. In fact most flights arrive over the bay so for visitors St Ouen's Bay will be the first part of Jersey they see. The bay is popular with walkers, surfers and photographers- best sunsets on the island in summer- and historians will find the scattered WW2 bunkers and Napoleonic Martello towers of interest. WHERE TO EAT Le Braye Cafe has plenty of parking and makes one of the best crab sandwiches in Jersey. On summers evenings it's fish curry, locally caught sea bream and other seafood specials that make it one of the best and most popular dining options 'out west'. The Line Up has been serving great bacon butties and hefty hamburgers on the beachfront for years and is always popular with locals. El Tico has a perfect location on the bay for sunset dining al fresco. Faulkner Fisheries at L'Etacq on the northern end of St Ouen's Bay cooks fresh local seafood grilled or BBQ in tin foil with bench seating overlooking the bay.

The University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) has welcomed the release of a study on the health risks of lead exposure as it relates to the air quality and exposure pathways in the Queensland mining city of Mount Isa. The Lead Pathways Study - Air Health Risk Assessment of Contaminants to Mount Isa City was conducted by UQ researchers Dr Barry Noller and Dr Jack Ng. It is the third report in a series commissioned by Mount Isa Mines, now a Glencore company, which has mined and processed minerals including silver, copper, lead and zinc at Mount Isa for more than 90 years. Dr Noller, an Associate Professor in SMI's Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation, said he was pleased the latest Air Report had been released by the company, as it made the information available for the public and the wider scientific community.
